Client Snapshot

As environmental and social factors are increasingly incorporated into lending and investment decisions, financial institutions are expected to be capable of detecting, analyzing, managing, and monitoring associated risks. An efficient Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) will help ensure the control of governing and mitigating risks, thus helping the entity comply with laws and regulations and raise stakeholder confidence.

This case study concerns a financial services organization with a growing portfolio of products and services to a range of customers in different countries. The company wanted to test the ESMS to determine if the environmental and social risk factors were appropriately identified, managed, and monitored for the financed activities. Thus, the objectives of our work there included assessing the design effectiveness and operational effectiveness of the system in accordance with the relevant regulations and requirements.

The Challenge

  • Ensuring that ESMS considerations were effectively integrated into credit appraisal and decision-making processes.
  • Variations in environmental and social risk profiles across projects and borrower categories created complexity in risk assessment and monitoring.
  • Limited documentation and inconsistent application of ESMS procedures across teams and locations affected implementation consistency.
  • Demonstrating compliance with regulator, lender, and sustainability expectations required a well-documented and effective ESMS framework.
  • Verifying whether defined ESMS procedures were being consistently implemented in practice across the portfolio.

Our Approach

  • Assessment of the design of the ESMS framework against relevant regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
  • Checked the implementation of the ESMS controls on specific projects and on certain loan portfolios.
  • Reviewed risk identification, analysis, documentation, and monitoring processes to assess consistency of approach.
  • Procedures, documentation, controls and governance were assessed for their current deficiencies and provided practical recommendations for improvement.
  • Improved risk identification, monitoring, and reporting systems to enhance overall ESMS effectiveness and compliance readiness.

Results Delivered

  • Reviewed the current ESMS system to establish whether all necessary regulatory and sustainability requirements are covered.
  • Recognized gaps in implementation and opportunities to improve consistency across teams and locations.
  • The process to identify, assess and monitor environmental and social risks have improved in their effectiveness.
  • Improved documentation, control systems, and reporting practices.
  • Built the organization’s ability to demonstrate its compliance with lender, regulator, and sustainability expectations.

Impact

The engagement helped the company evaluate and strengthen the effectiveness of its ESMS. The company could fix problems found in the design and operation of the ESMS. As a result, the company improved controls, procedures and reporting systems. The company also managed social risks better. The company increased compliance. Built a stronger way to include environmental and social factors, in investment decisions.
